Graphic Novel Reporter reviews Dean Haspiel’s BEEF WITH TOMATO

Excerpts:
“Subtle nods to his muses sprawl naked across the page, like the exhibitionists from “Boy Loves Girl Hair.” The art has a familiar, old school feel to it, but not for the sake of noir. It is indicative of the stark shadows of Alex Toth, the manic lines of Will Eisner, and even the grand scenery of Jack Kirby. In fact, Haspiel injects some of Kirby’s famous “crackle” in the final panel of “Awful George.”

“BEEF WITH TOMATO starts out with a stolen bicycle and a move to Brooklyn, continues with tales of whiskey-fueled nights in a post-9/11 NYC landscape, and ends with an essay about feeling at home wherever you are — set against the backdrop of a bustling artist community in Upstate New York. Through it all, this strong semi-autobiographical work does what any book, regardless of premise or plot, should achieve: It asks the reader to identify. Haspiel expertly portrays a sense of self-inspection and a love for the world around us through his prose and his drawings, without ever losing a sense of wonder.”

Hang Dai’s Dean Haspiel sported a quote for Michael Cavna’s report about SPX 2015 in The Washington Post:

“Hang Dai Editions is proud to debut three graphic novels at SPX that represents our side of the New York comics tracks, where semi-autobio converges with superhero ambiance and fine art,” Haspiel tells Comic Riffs. “I’m personally proud to finally furnish ‘Beef With Tomato,’ my love letter to NYC, and help shepherd the late Seth Kushner’s ‘Schmuck’ into fruition, alongside Hang Dai co-founder Gregory Benton and his beautifully mute book, ‘Smoke.’ ”

PopMythology reviews Dean Haspiel’s BEEF WITH TOMATO

11

PopMythology wrote a wonderful review of Dean Haspiel’s BEEF WITH TOMATO graphic novel.

Excerpts:
“It’s not just artistically that Haspiel has been influenced by the superhero ethos. While drawing all those heroes some part of that ethos must have seeped up from the Bristol paper, through his pen, through his veins and into his brain to inform his worldview. He’s got a knack for finding himself in strange, scary or dramatic situations (maybe it’s just a result of living in New York), and he seems to enjoy being the one to call the police or ambulance or the one to stop the gunman from reaching into his coat. Like the heroes he often draws, he doesn’t hesitate to leap into the thick of things to lend a helping hand, and in situations when he can’t, as in the 9/11 vignette “Doored,” it drives him crazy.

Ever by his side, Haspiel’s bicycle is like a second protagonist or sidekick in these stories. It’s the Rocinante in his Quixotic quest to see, absorb and understand as much of the chaotic tangle of humanity that is New York City (or at least Brooklyn) as he can. Or perhaps the Silver Surfer’s board would be a more apt comparison since Haspiel comes across as an observer orbiting people’s private worlds, sometimes stopping to help, sometimes getting into fights, all the while feeding his Galactus-like hunger for experience. Of course, the Surfer’s board doesn’t get ripped off or demolished nearly as often as Haspiel’s bike does so the analogy is admittedly a limited one!”

Comic Critique reviews Gregory Benton’s SMOKE & Seth Kushner’s SCHMUCK

Fox#1pitillivar

Adam McGovern wrote beautiful reviews for Gregory Benton’s SMOKE & Seth Kushner’s SCHMUCK at ComicCritique.com

SMOKE excerpts:
“The naive honesty of Benton’s cartooning style — no-doubt carefully cultivated — and the intricacy with which he envisions a garden of thick vegetation or a byzantine hell-palace of crisscrossing warehouse beams, is phenomenal, as is his fantasy palette of fiery and elysian other realms, and his grasp of cultural detail and extension of Day of the Dead and other memorial motifs.

The imaginary-friend/pet-dragon feeling of a certain major canine character we see on the cover (and who readers will recognize from Benton’s previous masterful myth about states of being, B+F) is vivid, but this is a bedtime story some don’t come back from, and one meant to give us strength even as it sadly soothes. Among the best things I’ve read this decade (without a single word), SMOKE shows titanic, intimate care for people’s honestly observed and deeply felt difficulties, their rare and treasured rewards, and the cyclical nature of mortality — giving a vision not only of a pasture waiting for everyone, but a proper place existing for each of us, on one side of eternity or the other, in a universe too vast to be cruel.”

SCHMUCK excerpts:
“Kushner knows how many sides there are to this story, so each one is expressed in a different visual voice. I especially like the tense, frenzied line of artist Kevin Colden; the out-of-register looseness and emotional immediacy of Nathan Schreiber; the garish, ungainly yet dynamic honesty of Skuds McKinley; the intimacy and authenticity of George Schall’s watercolor-sketchbook verite; and a tale with art by Christa Cassano in which the most physical of encounters is drawn with figures like phantoms and dreams.

The sexual slapstick is a hoot and sometimes horrid and always insightfully recalled, though the heart of the book for me was all those stilled and isolated moments when Adam’s loneliness surfaces and both his longing and his realization of what he’s really looking for come into view with nothing for him to currently block them out with. (Personal bias perhaps; I lost my wife to cancer not long after we lost Seth, and I relate to his avatar’s loneliness and uncertainty if not his pursuit.)

This all leads somewhere, and I can tell you without giving away too much that Seth didn’t always have unhappy endings. It’s no spoiler to you reading this, or anyone in the comics community, that long before he sprouted angel wings, the caterpillar turned into a mensch.”
